The Maidu Tribal Counsel deeded the five acre cemetery to the district in 1983 to protect the burial grounds from artifact hunters and vandals. The cemetery is left as natural as possible, with the exception of removing fire hazards to protect neighboring homes. It is only available for visitation by appointment.
The Maidu Tribal Burial Grounds is located on Gochine Drive north of Nevada City. It is a closed, inactive historic cemetery. To reach the cemetery, take Highway 49 north from Nevada City and turn right on Cement Hill Road. Turn left on Gochine Drive and watch for the double cyclone gates on the left that are the entrance to the burial grounds.
